Embalenhle Police Station lacks holding cells and detectives
Management of the police station raised challenges during an oversight visit.
A governmental oversight visit at the Embalenhle Police Station revealed inadequate holding cells, detectives and security, as well as aging infrastructure.
It was disclosed that currently, detectives are strained with heavy caseloads, which negatively impact the response to new cases, leaving residents vulnerable during emergencies. The station lacks CCTV, entrance security and holding cells for suspect processing. Moreover, the station only has four detention cells, three for males and one for females. The building itself is dilapidated with leaking roofs, frequent sewage spills and constant power outages.

All these failings were discussed during the visit conducted by the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee of Community Safety, Security and Liaison. This portfolio was led by acting chairperson, Teboho Sekaledi, on March 28.

Sekaledi recommended several interventions, such as increasing the number of staff and vehicles to enhance police visibility, replacing older vehicles, providing comprehensive training for all staff, and establishing a satellite station to ensure timely coverage of all areas.
It was also recommended that a stand-alone transformer be installed to address electricity related issues.
Sekaledi emphasised the need for collaborative efforts to address these challenges.
