Mpumalanga hosts provincial G20 Education Summit Indaba

The G20 Education Summit Indaba marked a milestone for Mpumalanga, showcasing its commitment to improving education and working towards a brighter future for its citizens.

The Department of Basic Education, in collaboration with the Department of Higher Education and Training, hosted the inaugural provincial G20 Education Summit Indaba at Anew Hotel in White River on Thursday, April 24.

This landmark summit marks the beginning of a series of provincial engagements aimed at fostering dialogue, collaboration and innovation in the education sector. The event convened key education stakeholders from across Mpumalanga and beyond to engage in meaningful discussions around the G20 agenda as it relates to education.

This Provincial G20 Education Summit represents a bold step forward in shaping a transformative, inclusive and future-ready education system. It demonstrated a collaborative approach, bringing together stakeholders, including school governing bodies (SGBs), learners and the teachers’ union.

This collective effort aims to provide input to the national summit of the G20, which will take place in November. The Mpumalanga premier, Mandla Ndlovu, said it is a historic day as the province started laying the foundation for the upcoming G20 summit.

“We are honoured to be the first province to host a G20 Education Summit. We are aware that the other eight provinces are yet to host theirs.”

The deputy minister of basic education, Reginah Mhaule, highlighted the importance of early development in children, emphasising that teachers should focus on nurturing their strengths.

“As the education representatives of the G20, we were given the responsibility to ensure all stakeholders and partners participate. Every province will have their own indabas, and when we go to the national summit, we will give feedback,” said Mhaule.
