Driven by duty: Constable protects eMalahleni’s vulnerable

A dedicated 31-year-old police constable and investigator with the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit at eMalahleni SAPS is driven by a deep commitment to protecting children, vulnerable individuals and the broader community. In celebration of Youth Month, the SAPS has spotlighted Constable Mlungisi Ernest Makhanya for his significant contributions to the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) and sexual offences.

After completing his police training in 2016, Makhanya was first stationed at the community service centre at Elukwatini SAPS. Two years later, he joined the eMalahleni FCS Unit as an investigator.

He has undergone specialised training in handling GBV-related cases – training that has not only strengthened his resolve but also made him a formidable presence in the fight against abuse. In just one year, Makhanya successfully secured convictions against three sexual predators, each receiving a life sentence plus 10 years’ imprisonment.

Some of these cases involved child victims, further underscoring his unwavering dedication to his role. Makhanya remains committed to combatting GBV and sexual crimes in the community he serves.
