Teacher launches Phola learning hub to support local learners

A passion for teaching and a desire to support learners beyond the classroom inspired Mohlala to establish Lindo’s Learning Hub.

A passion for teaching and a desire to support learners beyond the classroom inspired Lindobuhle Mohlala (22) to establish Lindo’s Learning Hub.Mohlala, a University of the Free State alumna with a Bachelor of Education specialising in Accounting and Business Studies, founded the initiative to provide learners with additional academic support while creating a positive and encouraging learning environment.

“I realised that many learners need additional support outside the classroom. I wanted to create a space where learners could get that support while also feeling comfortable, motivated and confident,”
she said.

The hub offers extra classes, homework assistance, exam preparation and academic support for learners from grades one to 12, with a strong focus on matric learners. Subjects offered include accounting, economics, business studies, mathematical literacy, and economic and management sciences (EMS).

Mohlala said the idea was born from her teaching experience, where she noticed that some learners struggled because they needed more individual attention and guidance at their own pace.

“Not every learner learns at the same pace. Extra support gives them more time to ask questions, practise, and get individual attention. It can make a big difference in their confidence and academic performance,” she said.

Starting the initiative came with challenges, including building awareness and earning the trust of parents and learners.
“One of the biggest challenges was getting people to know and trust the Hub. I also had to manage everything myself, from teaching and planning to communicating with parents and organising activities,” said Mohlala.

Despite these challenges, she remains encouraged by the positive impact the Hub has had on learners. To date, about 20 learners have benefited from the programme.

“I have seen learners become more confident, participate more and become more comfortable with subjects they previously struggled with. Seeing a learner finally understand something they found difficult is one of the most rewarding parts for me,” she said.
Beyond academics, Lindo’s Learning Hub also hosts recreational activities aimed at promoting social interaction and personal growth. The Hub hosted a Fun Day on June 16 in celebration of Youth Day and a Colour Run on Saturday, September 3.

“I believe children need more than academics. They also need opportunities to have fun, socialise and simply be children,” she said.

According to Mohlala, the response from learners, parents and the community has been overwhelmingly positive.

“Seeing the excitement from the learners and the support from parents and the community showed me that there is a real need for activities that bring children together,” she said.

Looking ahead, she hopes learners will continue to gain confidence, build friendships and create lasting memories through the Hub’s activities.
