Area Guide: Mpumalanga’s Top Towns

Approximately 4 millions people call Mpumalanga home, and the majority of those are spread throughout the 5 biggest towns in the province. So what are the biggest towns in Mpumalanga, and why do people choose it over other provinces in the country?

Mpumalanga, or “the place where the sun rises” in Zulu, is a province full of amazing scenery, wildlife, outdoor activities and attractions and a very mild climate. Those are the main reasons that make the Lowveld as popular a destination as it is, but for those looking to explore the towns in the province, where are the biggest hubs?

Mbombela, formerly Nelspruit, is located on the Crocodile River and is the capital of the province. It’s accentuated by lush surrounds, leafy hills and valleys as well as most modern amenities. The Lowveld National Botanical Garden is one of it’s biggest attractions, but it’s certainly not a one-horse town.

As the result of the gold rush in 1880, Baberton came into existence. Most famous for having some of the oldest known exposed rocks on earth, as well as a myriad of hiking trails to explore the region, Baberton is also home to a number of museums that portray the history of the area wonderfully.

White River is the agricultural heart of Mpumalanga as it’s responsible for the production of timber, flowers, tropical fruit and vegetables. It’s also the closest to the Kruger National Park’s Crocodile River entrance, making it a very popular holiday town.

Only 10km from the Phabeni Gate of the Kruger National Park, Hazyview is a truly amazing little town. Surrounded by private game reserves, a thriving banana industry and some truly spectacular scenery (which can be enjoyed from a hot air balloon for the brave), Hazyview is a prime location to start any hunt for property for sale in Mpumalanga.
