How to dye pasta and make necklaces
Read on if you're looking for an imaginative, yet economical, craft project you can do with your children today.
Hand-dying pasta with vinegar and food colouring is so easy and is also fantastic for sensory play! The vinegar aids in distributing the food colouring and ensures that the pasta is colour-fast once dry.
What you need
- Uncooked hollow pasta (penne)
- Liquid food colouring
- Vinegar
- lidded plastic containers (or re-sealable food storage bags)
- Baking sheet
How to make it
- Put the pasta in a food storage container (the amount can be a couple of handfuls to a couple of cups).
- In a small mixing bowl, combine one teaspoon vinegar and several food colouring drops. Work on each colour one at a time.
- Pour the vinegar/food colouring mixture over the pasta, close the container, and have your child shake it until the pasta is well coated.
- Spread the spaghetti out on a baking sheet in a single layer to dry.
- Once dry, give your child a plastic sewing needle and a long length of yarn and help them make their own pasta necklace.
