Nineteen schools from both circuits were acknowledged on January 31.

The Class of 2024’s top achievers from schools in the White-Hazy circuits (1 and 2) were celebrated by the White-Hazy High Schools Ambassadors at the Hazyview Comprehensive School on January 31.

Nineteen schools from both circuits were recognised, and the top three learners from each school received certificates and medals.

Educators who excelled with an 80% and above pass rate also received certificates and medals.

The four schools that achieved 100% pass rates were also celebrated. These were Mshadza Secondary, Phola Secondary, Shabalala Secondary and Hazyview Comprehensive.

The White-Hazy 1 Circuit, managed by Thandi Masango, achieved a pass rate of 95%, placing it second in the entire province. This is an improvement from 2023’s results of 88.3%.

The White-Hazy 2 Circuit, managed by Alletah Mlimi, also improved its result from 84% in 2023 to 94% in 2024.

Hazyview Comprehensive High School achieved first place in the category of quintile 2 schools. Sibusiso Mashele, the principal, thanked his staff and learners for their dedication and commitment.

The chairperson of the White-Hazy High Schools Ambassadors, Sipho Zitha, said the purpose of the event was to honour the achievers before they head off to their respective tertiary institutions to pursue higher education. “We not only seek to celebrate the learners and teachers of the circuits, but to offer assistance with academic, psychological and sports support. That is why the day also started off with a walk to encourage healthy living and lifestyles,” he said.

Zitha added that if the culture of excellence thrives in township and village schools, it will have a huge socio-economic impact. “We call on the Department of Higher Education to consider improving the student intake and curriculum scope of the local public colleges that mostly offer limited curricula. We call for the government to install more libraries and sustainable internet connectivity at all schools,” he said.

The celebration was sponsored by SODIC Training and Development, Unity Technologies and Bayile Investments. Bayile’s director, Dommenic Khubayi, thanked the Dr Mathews Phosa Marathon, SA Men First and the Mpumalanga Department of Education, for collectively supporting the event, while Abigail Davis from Unity emphasised the need for community members to avail their expertise and resources to advance excellence in rural villages and township schools.
