The event is designed to accommodate all skill levels from fun run to half-marathon.

Bella’s Athletics Club will host the third annual gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) road race in Mbombela on Saturday, August 9.
Established in 2023, the race was created in memory of a female club member who was tragically murdered – a crime that shook the local running community. Since then, the event has grown into a powerful platform for awareness, remembrance and advocacy, using the spirit of sport to unite the community in the fight against GBVF.
The 2025 edition is set to be the biggest yet, with support from key stakeholders such as the Mpumalanga SAPS and Greater Rape Intervention Project. The day’s focus will be on raising awareness, encouraging reporting and connecting survivors to support services.
Race categories are as follows:
• 21km Half-Marathon: Starts at 06:00 from NTT Toyota in White River and finishes at Mbombela Stadium. This fast, mostly downhill route is ideal for those chasing personal bests.
•10km Race: Begins at 06:30 from Mbombela Stadium, following a scenic route toward Lydenburg Road and back.
• 4.9km Fun Run: Also starting at 06:30 from Mbombela Stadium, this relaxed route is suited to families and casual runners.
• Street Mile: A new, fast-paced race around the stadium, open to all ages, starts at 10:00.
Bus transport for 21km runners will operate between 03:30 and 05:00 from Mbombela Stadium to the start line in White River.
The event welcomes runners of all fitness levels and ages. Among this year’s ambassadors are Shahieda “Makhi” Thungo, known for her mantra “I’m the Change,” and local GBVF activist Sue-Ellen Gower, whose message “Empower. Protect. Respect.” echoes the race’s mission.
Top contenders expected on the day include defending champion Regan Magwai and local favourites Prince Ndlovu, Abednico Mashaba, Sam Mathabatha, Sibonginkosi Maseko and Nomvula Sithole. Lucky draws, spot prizes and cash rewards will add to the festive atmosphere.
