71 illegal schools shut down in Gauteng over the past 2 financial years

In a decisive move to protect learners, the Gauteng Department of Education has closed numerous unregistered schools and continues to monitor high-risk areas to prevent their return.

The Gauteng Department of Education says it continues to act decisively against illegal and unregistered schools that place learners’ safety, well-being and prospects at risk.

Germiston City News reports that the department says unlawful institutions often operate without proper accreditation, qualified educators or adequate facilities, and that they undermine the quality and credibility of education.

According to the department, it has identified and closed 71 illegal or unregistered schools operating across Gauteng over the past two financial years.

The department says it works closely with law enforcement agencies, the security cluster and local ward councillors to prevent these schools from resurfacing under new names.

“Departmental officials also conduct periodic monitoring visits to previously affected areas to ensure compliance.”

The department says it will continue to collaborate with municipalities, law enforcement agencies and communities to ensure that unregistered and unsafe schools are identified and shut down promptly.

It says regular stakeholder engagements and joint operations are conducted in areas where illegal schools are prevalent, and that community structures have been established to serve as the department’s eyes and ears on the ground.
