Bullets fly as courier carrier comes under fire on N2 in KZN

An Umhlanga resident has warned other courier companies driving on the N2 between Ifafa Beach and Bazley Beach on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast to be hyper-vigilant after a gang of men attempted to rob him by opening fire on him recently,  Northglen News reports.

The resident, who did not want to be named, said the incident occurred at about 5.30pm just after the Ifafa Beach off-ramp.

The resident who runs a small goods courier company was carrying more than R30 000 in cash and was travelling back home on the northbound carriageway when he came under fire.

“I think this gang saw the canopy of my bakkie and assumed I had something of value in the vehicle. I don’t have any logos on my bakkie so this makes me think they were hoping I was carrying something of value in the car. I was driving back from Margate after making a delivery and after I passed the Ifafa off-ramp I noticed a white VW sedan drive up alongside my bakkie. The passenger in the front seat had a firearm pointed at me and he ordered me to pull over. They also chose a stretch because there were no other vehicles travelling north at this time.

“As an experienced driver, I kept calm and accelerated. It was at this point the passenger began opening fire and tried to shoot my front tyre to make me stop or worse, have an accident. I just knew if they hit my tyre, my intention was then to try and take them off the road. He must have fired about five or six shots while trying to push me off the road. After about two or three kilometres for some unknown reason, the pursuing car pulled back and I looked in my rearview mirror I saw the car stopped in the emergency lane. I think their vehicle had mechanical difficulties,” he said.

Running on adrenaline, the resident drove to the nearest police station in Scottsburgh.

“When I got out of my vehicle I realised how lucky I was. I noticed that at least two bullets hit the sill just below the right-hand door, luckily none of the other shots had damaged my vehicle. I was extremely traumatised by the incident and I felt other courier companies needed to be warned. I do feel they must’ve been watching my vehicle and decided that stretch was quiet enough to try and run me off the road,” he said.
