Month of searching Crocodile River for missing girl in Mpumalanga

The search for a missing three-year-old in the Crocodile River continues, with police using a hovercraft and drones.

Mpumalanga police said the search for three-year-old Aqhama Mconywa in the Crocodile River at Schagen is still ongoing.

According to Lowvelder, the Ehlanzeni Police Diving Unit has been scouring the river from Schagen since the evening of April 13. Despite challenges, such as being unable to dive into the river due to an overpopulation of crocodiles and hippos, the unit has searched up to Mataffin looking for the little girl.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane has affirmed that the missing person’s case is still active and the diving unit is still searching.

At the end of April, the unit obtained a new search and rescue boat, a hovercraft, for the search. The boat is designed for rescues in muddy and shallow waters, making it suitable for the Crocodile River.

Ndubane said drones and the K9 Unit were deployed without success.

Aqhama was among seven people flung into the river from the back of a bakkie that was travelling on the N4 from Marite to Gauteng. Three died, including Aqhama’s mum, and another three survived.
