Ramaphosa orders probe into South Africans caught up in Ukraine conflict

Seventeen South African men, mostly from KZN, are trapped in Ukraine after being lured into mercenary work under false employment promises.

The South African government has received distress calls from 17 South African men, including 16 from KZN, requesting assistance to return home.

The Witness reports that the men, aged between 20 and 39, are reportedly trapped in the war-torn Donbas region of Ukraine.

Lured with promises of lucrative jobs

According to the Presidency, the group was lured into joining mercenary forces involved in the Russia–Ukraine war under the pretext of lucrative employment contracts.

In terms of the Foreign Military Assistance Act of 1998, it is illegal for South African citizens or entities to offer or provide military assistance to foreign governments or to participate in foreign armies without authorisation from the South African government.

Ramaphosa orders investigation

President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered an investigation into the circumstances that led to the recruitment of these young men into what appear to be mercenary activities.

“The South African government is working through diplomatic channels to secure the return of these young men following their calls for assistance to return home,” said the Presidency.

Government condemns exploitation of citizens

Ramaphosa and the South African government have strongly condemned the exploitation of vulnerable young people by individuals linked to foreign military entities.
