Rough seas claim first victim (93), public warned about high tide this afternoon
An elderly woman was reportedly swept into the ocean in Wilderness, after rough seas battered the SA coast yesterday.
A 93-year-old woman has died when she was reportedly swept off her feet at Leentjiesklip in Wilderness following rough seas in the Garden Route.
Spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Craig Lambinon says waves swept over a parking lot yesterday afternoon and it is their understanding that her death is weather-related.
Lambinon says another person was injured and taken to hospital.
The identity of the woman has not yet been disclosed.
The Garden Route has been hit by gale force winds and rough seas combined with the new moon spring causing havoc in Mossel Bay, Herolds Bay and George.
Beaches in the Garden Route remain closed and residents from Herolds Bay and Victoria Bay had to be evacuated when astronomical waves led to coastal flooding causing structural damage worth thousands of rand.
Several roads were also closed including all roads leading to beaches in George.
Residents of Herolds Bay, who live close to the ocean, have been advised to vacate their homes. Electricity in the area is estimated to be restored in about 10 days.
The Department of Water and Sanitation has warned that high tide will return to the Garden Route at 16:50 today.
Waves up to 4.5m are expected and residents have been warned to stay away from beach areas.
