Tshwane mayor Stevens Mokgalapa bows out in two weeks

Mokgalapa will officially vacate office in a week and a half, only a year and a half since assuming office.

Outgoing Tshwane mayor Stevens Mokgalapa briefed the press this week on the service delivery highlights of his tenure, Rekord North reports.

He said he wanted to make clear that the reasons for his resignation are solely in the interest of service delivery, for the benefit of the residents of Tshwane.

Mokgalapa will officially vacate office in a week and a half, only a year and a half since assuming office.

“This is something I’m doing in the spirit of public interest on governance at the metro, accountability to residents and transparency as positive indicators in leading a stable administration.”

He highlighted the below achievements:

– establishment of an in-house asset protection unit
– termination of the GladAfrica consultancy agreement
– introduction of the integrated urban management framework
– establishment of letsema unit
– finding a lasting and sustainable solution to the Hammanskraal water crisis
– crafting a local economic development strategy
– Monyetla 2030 youth development programme
– long-term transport strategy
– the follow-the-money initiative for accountability and transparency
– significant reduction of irregular expenditure
– the Re Aga Tshwane campaign
– the gender action plan
– the public lighting programme
– acquisition of 329 of the in-house fleet to boost the city’s response time to residents
– upgrade of Itireleng informal settlement

Mokgalapa said these, among others, contributed immensely to his administration’s efforts to change the socio-economic landscape of communities by creating jobs and lifting households out of poverty.

The mayor did not shy away from answering questions about his future, divulging he remained a member of the DA and was considering various options going forward.

He thanked those who supported him and said he looks forward to the city growing after his departure.
