Outgoing Wits SRC president Shaeera Kalla, Wits EFF acting chairperson Vuyani Pambo, former Wits SRC president Mcebo Dlamini and newly-elected Wits SRC president Nompendulo Mkhatshwa lead the protest.

Wits University students started protesting on 14 October against the university’s 10.5 per cent fees increment.

The decision to increase the fees was subsequently postponed for negotiations. The students and the management of the university have not yet reached an agreement, however, the Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande has promised students that the increment will not exceed 6 per cent.

This was still rejected by students who remain steadfast to their “zero per cent fees increment” demand. The protest has since spread to universities around the country.
