An in depth look at Brixton Police Station’s performance this year

BRIXTON – Focusing on some of the key takeaways from this police stations annual crime statistics.

The 2017/2018 South Africa Police Service statistics revealed that murder had increased nationally and that Cape Town Central had recorded the most cases.

However, Brixton Police Station recorded seven fewer murders and 13 fewer attempted murder cases over this period.

Spokesperson of the station, Jeanette Backhoff, said this was due to their active and visible policing.

She said, “We increased police visibility in all the areas by using all possible resources available to us.

We have reservists that are hands on and with the involvement of the security companies, community patrollers and members of the community, we managed to reduce it. We also have regular integrated operations in problem areas and hotspots.”

The station recorded the exact number of rape cases as in 2016/2017, 27 in all, and in total there were 40 sexual offence cases opened during both years [is that 40 per year or 20 cases in each year does it include the rape figure – plse simplify].

Backhoff stated that in most of these cases the suspect was usually known to the victim and liquor was also a common feature.

Brixton police also responded to a bank robbery in this period, the first one since 2010/2011.

Backhoff said, “The one bank robbery reported happened at Capitec bank in Campus Square in Melville. All suspects have been arrested and one of the suspects was an employee at the bank.”

Earlier this year, for the second year running, this station was named the best police station in the Johannesburg central cluster.

When asked if the station was content with their crime statistics, Backhoff said, “There is always room for improvement but we need the community to get on board and to make this a joint effort. We can only make it a safer place if we join hands and to work as a team in this community.”
