Life gets whimsical in Westdene
Orban School hosted the audiences to the whimsical adventures of Alice in Wonderland.

It was a fantastical adventure for audiences when, for the first time in four years, Orban School hosted a major production – a live musical theatre rendition of Alice in Wonderland.
The school’s Louine van der Vyver said the last time they had the privilege of seeing the entire school on stage was in 2019, when that year’s Grade 7s presented the South African première of Xanadu.

In 2021 and 2022 the school produced two movies, The Little Mermaid and Seussical. This year, children were back on stage and as usual all the Grade 7s were cast as main characters in the stage production that had music, dance and lots of drama that taught valuable life skills.

“There is nothing like the thrill of a live performance. The school hall transformed into a wondrous place and it felt fantastic to attend Orban’s first live production in four years. There’s the anticipation before the curtain opens and the music starts to play; the prickles of excitement along every parent’s spine; and the moment of truth – live action in a jam-packed hall, adrenaline running high,” said Van der Vyver.

She added that the children had to sing, dance and learn so many words which they did perfectly.

Orban’s arts department, consisting of teachers Michele Zulch (drama), Stephen Hawkins (dance) and Marlies van Tonder (art), and the teaching staff are said to have all helped create a magical event.
