Fred and Martie’s Soup Kitchen needs your help

CLAREMONT - Fred and Martie's kitchen needs funds to continue feeding 500 children.

Fred and Martie’s Soup Kitchen needs your help

Operators of Fred and Martie’s Soup Kitchen Yolindie and Riaan Oberholzer have launched a fundraising campaign that will help feed even more members of the Claremont community.

The non-government organisation has been feeding hundreds of people from the Claremont community for more than 32 years.

“We decided to embark on a project approaching the public to adopt a child by means of R100 donation per month. We are in desperate need of support to ensure the sustainability of our organisation,” daughter of the founders, Yolindie Oberholzer, said.

“The number of children are increasing on an almost daily basis. Food prices are increasing and we are on our knees praying,” she added.

Oberholzer said the funds will also help them continue to distribute food parcels to the elderly in addition to the 500 children they feed.

“Our needs are not only financial, we are in need of any unwanted or unused household items, clothing, shoes, blankets, cleaning material, groceries, meat, vegetables, tinned food, cutlery, crockery, tables, chairs, basically anything that you would use in your home.”

The soup kitchen was founded by Fred and Martie Hughes, who had both experienced life in poverty and noticed the need when they moved to Claremont in 1981.

Since the death of her mother and the deteriorating health of her father, Oberholzer and her husband have been continuing their legacy.
