Workers join fight against crime
EMMARENTIA- Domestic workers were recently trained on crime emergency procedures by CAP.
The first domestic training session hosted by Emmarentia Greenside Community Active Protection (EGCAP) was held in Emmarentia to much success.
About 200 domestic workers, gardeners and security guards attended the training sessions, where they were taught what to do in an emergency, and how to react when they see or hear unusual activities in the area.
“The training was very helpful as I now know how to react during dangerous situations,” said one of the attendees, Angela Ncube said.
Ncube added that the training helped her realise she needed to be more alert and safety-conscious, especially with identifying strangers and suspicious people in the area asking suspicious questions.
“The turnout was amazing,” said EGCAP spokesperson Gila Klatzkin said impressed.
“Talking to this group of people was very inspiring,” she added.
Klatzkin expressed her relief that “they [domestic workers] were so enthusiastic and excited to participate, to learn how they can protect themselves, and to see how we all play our role in protecting the community”.
Hayley Taylor a resident said she feels much safer with the EGCAP vehicles patrolling the area.
“It is reassuring to know that you can phone EGCAP when there is anything suspicious and they will follow up on the issue,” Taylor said.
The idea of the training is to reinforce EGCAP’s values, which are to protect everyone in the community, even if one only works in the environment.
Klatzkin underscored the role of domestic workers, gardeners and security guards in eradicating crime in the community.
“They are the people that walk the streets, know the neighbours and understand when something is out of place,” Klatzkin explained.
All attendees were given lanyards with EGCAP emergency and “please call me” numbers. They received a list of safety tips written in Zulu, Sotho and English.
EGCAP was established in 2006 and started operating in Greenside and Emmarentia last year.
Two tactical vehicles with two officers in each vehicle patrol the area 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Klatzkin believes their crime solutions have helped fight crime since its inception last year.
