Be a woman of worth

MELVILLE - Don't burn your bra this Women's Day. Instead learn to have it fitted correctly.

Strike a woman, and you strike a rock.

Since 1956, this phrase has come to represent the courage and the strength of women in South Africa, and it’s the mantra of South African Women’s Day on 9 August.

Zelda Gauld, practice manager at Dr Gail Ashford and Dr Greg Jonsson medical practioners, is passionate about women’s rights. “Women are one of the most important building blocks of any society,” Gauld said in Melville on 21 July.

“I want to help to uplift women in our communities. (International writer) Isabel Allende said that women still do two thirds of the world’s labour and own less than one percent of its assets. We need to address that. We need to stand together. And on Women’s Day we need to be spoiled and make time for ourselves.”

To that end, Gauld has organised Women of Worth, a Women’s Day event exclusively about celebrating women.

The event includes a delicious lunch and other refreshments, goodie bags, lucky prizes and an array of excellent speakers addressing topics as wide as being in a man’s world to wardrobe tips and expert make-up advice. There will even be a bra-fitting specialist. Have you always wondered whether you’re wearing the right size? Marelie Venter will enlighten you.

Dr Rachel Moore, a surgeon at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital will talk about the world of the surgeon, and about being a woman in a male-dominated profession. Wardrobe stylist Marinda Aucamp will revolutionise your wardrobe and teach women to ”use what you have –but to use it smartly,” while international stylist Adrian Furstenburg will update you on the latest fashion trends. Gauld herself will be speaking about her own life experiences, and about celebrating individuality. Dr Gail Ashford tackles the issue about what she has learned from treating HIV-positive women, and make-up artist Lizanne Oshmann will discuss enhancing the beauty within (and of course will help with the beauty without.)

The event will be held at the Wits Donald Gordon medical centre in Parktown. To book your ticket, SMS your email address to Zelda on 083 228 3322, or email her on prac.mng@gmail.com.

Tickets for Women of Worth cost R250 for a whole day’s pampering, inspiration and entertainment, and the first five ladies from Northcliff Melville Times who contact Zelda can get their tickets for R200.

Go on women of Johannesburg, spoil yourself. You’re more than worth it.
