Pink Trees for Pauline ready for breast cancer awareness month

AUCKLAND PARK – Trees around the Randburg area will be covered in pink on 15 October in a breast cancer awareness initiative.

In support of Pink Trees for Pauline, Resolution Circle and The Fairway Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort will launch the Cancer Awareness Project on 15 October, by wrapping all the trees along Setperk Street in Randburg in bright pink.

This nationwide initiative began in 2012 with Carol-Ann van Jaarsveld and breast cancer survivor, Adri van Nieuwenhuizen, together with Dr Pam Ker founding Pink Trees for Pauline.

This non-profit organisation aims to unite people for one day each year, in order to improve the lives of those living with cancer.

“It was founded in honour of van Jaarsveld’s mother and grandmother – both named Pauline – who lost their battles with cancer,” says events manager Lynn Kruger.

According to Kruger, the organisation is hoping to raise R5 000.

The Fairway Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort will not only be hosting this beautiful event, but will also be contributing to this worthy cause and the funds raised with this project will be donated to a local hospice to help cancer patients and caregivers.

More than 20 engineering students from Resolution Circle (a University of Johannesburg company that develops spin-off companies) have volunteered their time to create some magic on the streets of Johannesburg.

According to the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa), 90 per cent of cancers are caused by environmental and lifestyle factors such as smoking, diet and exercise.

The appalling statistics further show that about 100 000 South Africans are diagnosed with cancer every year and the South African survival rate is six out of 10.

Additionally, one in four South Africans is affected by cancer through diagnosis of family, friends or self.
