Fun day for children in need
NEWLANDS – Children from Claremont are treated to a fun day before Christmas.
Children from Claremont enjoyed a day of fun courtesy of the Waterval Gemeente in Newlands on 6 December.
Water games and slip-and-slide events were hosted in order to brighten the lives of the children.
Event organiser Frik Johnson was hard at work making sure all the children were entertained.
“The community is very excited. The children have been looking forward to this the whole year round,” said Johnson.
The community of Newlands and the congregation of Waterval Gemeente went to great lengths to provide a supportive, safe and fun environment for the children of Claremont.
Johnson said they received immense financial support from the community and from external benefactors. “Otherwise we wouldn’t have been able to do all this for the children. Deon Swanepoel is one of our biggest sponsors and we are very fortunate to have him involved with our projects” he said.
Waterval Gemeente deacon Ben Jonker was one of the members that participated in the fun with the children.
“It’s a fun day for the children to just relax and forget about their worries for a while,” he said.
One of the community volunteers Ralie van Heerden helped prepare food and gift packets, and felt she and her follow members really made a difference in the children’s lives.
“It makes a person feel humble. You can really see with how little the children can get by with. They are happy to receive anything even if it’s second-hand toys,” Van Heerden said.
The Community of Newlands and the congregation of the Waterval Gemeente hope to continue this tradition for many more years.
