High school inter-house plays a success

NORTHCLIFF – Northcliff High’s Nobuhle Mazibuko says house-plays allow pupils to unleash the people they wish to become.

Northcliff High School Inter-house Plays Festival of 2015 was a huge success as the audience was left yearning for more.

“The talent that presented itself on the Northcliff High School stage was beyond anything we could have hoped for,” said Lizl Thorne, school media liaison.

The four houses of the school –Pinnacle, Cairn, Dragoon and Sentinel – all had the opportunity to enter plays into the competition.

For this festival, the pupils could pick an existing play or write a play themselves.

They were all responsible for directing the play, organising props, lighting and scripts.

The winning play from Pinnacle, For the Love of You, received a standing ovation.

The play was written and directed by a matric student, Nina Rose Tidy.

“I think we won because the play means something. It spoke to anyone and everyone who has ever experienced struggle – whether it’s domestic abuse, alcoholism, single parenthood or unfaithfulness. The cast looked deep into themselves and connected to their characters and were thus able to share their emotion with the audience. It was real and it left a message,” said Tidy.

Pupil Monray Louw on the other hand said, “We are a dynamic cast who have a passion for the dramatic arts and enjoy working together to produce a theatrical piece.”

The junior play directors proved that they were a force to be reckoned with after producing four very entertaining plays.

The adjudicators felt that the performance given by the Pinnacle junior actors and actresses in School Daze not only deserved to win the award of Best Junior House Play, but they also thought that it was the most entertaining play of the entire festival.

“Northcliff High is very proud of these incredibly talented pupils. The efforts of the pupils and the staff behind the scenes made this festival a huge success,” added Thorne.

Another cast member, Elektra Tokkos said, “From my experience, house-plays develop you as a person. Before, I was extremely shy and struggled to communicate, but now I’ve gained confidence and have opened up as a person.”
