New graduates at St Augustine
VICTORY PARK — Students at the St Augustine College reap the rewards of their hard work.
Dozens of soon-to-be graduates beamed with pride as they prepared to accept their degrees on 8 May at St Augustine College in Victory Park.
The students walked on stage to accept degrees and masters in philosophy and theology. Chairman of the Board Brian Scallan congratulated the new graduates and spoke encouraging words of wisdom about entering the professional world.
Scallan announced the appointment of Professor Garth Abraham as president and CEO of the college.
“He comes with a strong academic record from the University of the Witwatersrand, where he was an associate professor of law. The St Augustine College has a number of challenges as it rebuilds itself but the board is confident that Prof Abraham’s experience and leadership will see that those challenges are met with distinction.”
Dr Judy Coyle read an inspiring citation for the award of Bonum Commune to Father Albert Nolan.
Father Nolan became famous for his 1976 book Jesus before Christianity in which he presented an account of Christ’s radical involvement in the struggle for full humanity.
“Nolan combines theological acumen, prayer, religious discipline and social activism. He has not ceased, even at the age of 80, to offer direction to the young and spiritual guidance to the seeker,” she concluded.
