Rugby tourmanment encourages pupil development

NEWLANDS – Laerskool Esperanza plays host to a rugby tournament to encourage sports skills among pupils.

 

Laerskool Esperanza hosted an U8 rugby tournament in Newlands on 3 June.

The tournament saw eight primary schools compete, including Laerskool Esperanza, Laerskool Dalmondeor, Laerskool Horison, Laerskool Jan Celliers, Laerskool Unika, Laerskool Louw Geldenhuys, Bryanston Parallel Medium and Laerskool Generaal Christiaan De Wet.

The schools participated in 12 friendly matches that aimed to encourage pupils to develop active skills on the sports field. These matches were divided into four rounds of 20 minutes.

Laerskool Esperanza Principal Martin Bensch explained the main reason behind the tournament, “What makes this tournament so unique is that the pupils partook in mini rugby. All of the staff present at the tournament are professionally qualified to deal with these matches,” he said.

He explained that the games were played with eight players on each side. “This tournament gives them the opportunity to learn match structures, which all-and-all constitutes to rugby development for the team,” he said.

The referees present at the tournament were provided by Laerskool Esperanza.

Coach and Deputy Principal at Laerskool Esperanza, Anthony Louw was thrilled at the opportunity to host all eight primary schools that competed during the tournament. “This tournament serves as a wonderful opportunity to start developing our pupils’ skills on the sports field from an early stage,” he said.
