Residents are urged to channel information of any criminal activity and bylaw transgression to the Fairland CPF.

On 9 June, the Fairland Community Policing Forum (CPF) held their AGM at Mosaïek Church in Fairland.

Fairland CPF Chairman, Gulam Karim, explained that their role is to relay the concerns and needs of residents to the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).

“A CPF is the mouthpiece of the community,” said Karim. “We are accountable to you, the residents and rate payers. We would like to encourage you to use us as a communication hub. If you are not sure who to turn to – SAPS or JMPD – we will refer you to the correct person. You can SMS myself or the Station Commissioner at Fairland SAPS photographs and details of criminal activities and by-law transgressions as and when they happen, and we will endeavour to address the matter as soon as possible.”

JMPD’s Chief Superintendent, Mike Smith, said that vagrants seem to be the biggest problem. “The homeless are an ongoing concern. Unfortunately there is only so much that the JMPD can do. It’s a socio-economic issue. We need social services on board.” He warned that vigilantism is not the answer. “There are procedures to be followed.”

Residents are urged to report every crime or by-law transgression that takes place. “Those that nag the most get the most,” said Ward 89 councillor, Ingrid Reinten. “This is the only way more resources will be allocated to us.”

Fairland Station Commissioner, Lieutenant Colonel M J Maluleke, took pains to reassure the community that SAPS do care. “We are a family, our doors are always open, we are here for you.”

“Over the past five years, crime levels in our precinct have gone down,” concluded Karim. “Ours is a relatively safe community compared to others around the province. But we can do better. We can always do more.”
