UJ junior rugby is all about development

AUCKLAND PARK – UJ Rugby Club chairperson Johan van Zyl says it is important to develop young athletes to build stronger teams.

The UJ Junior Rugby Club (UJ-JRC) would like to make an impact on their players by instilling commitment, dedication and education. ”Our players are not on the same skills level when our season starts, and the coaches find it difficult to focus on team development while attempting to give individual attention to developing young athletes,” said chairperson of the club Johan (Mielie) van Zyl. He also stated that it is UJ-JRC’s mission to develop their players and add more value to their members.

He added that as a club they feel it would be beneficial for young athletes wanting to learn more about the game. Joining training sessions earlier than usual will give the club time to focus on individual development to form a strong team.

The IRB (International Rugby Board) has released a minimum skill level requirement chart for each age group to ensure that all players have a minimum skill set. This not only makes the game competitive but improves the quality of the players at a specific age.

UJ has participated in the Inter-Provincial Tournament (IPT) since 2009 (representing the Lions). IPT 2015 will be hosted by Lions and UJ Junior Rugby Club at UJ club grounds later this year.
