EMMARENTIA – Future-proof your kids by encouraging them to become entrepreneurs.
About 50 000 walkers braved icy temperatures and took to the streets of Joburg in the annual 702 Walk The Talk on 26 July, to raise awareness of / or funds for a cause close to their hearts.
702 radio host Bruce Whitfield and the team from The Money Show walked to promote entrepreneurship and micro-enterprise among children.
As part of their initiative, they gave 13 young start-ups the opportunity to sell their products and services to a captive audience of 50 000 walkers, and stand a chance to bag their share of R10 000 prize money.
Kidpreneurs selected to punt their businesses on the day were Shayna Levy (10), Bianca Wheatley (11), Jayden van Wyk (11), Ryan Trickett (12), Klara Eales (13), Zameer Dada (13), Conrad Reid (14), Nawaal Jacobs (14), Amy Erin Witkin (15), Cassidy Gray (15), Nivriti Nirghin (15), Samkelisiwe Chissano (15), and Byron Tyers (18).
Products for sale included flags with various charitable causes printed on them, a herbal sunscreen, beverages, snacks, hair accessories, snoods, temporary tattoos, and small pastel-coloured rocks to raise funds for breast cancer awareness.
“Every kid should learn about entrepreneurship,” said Pavlo Phitidis, director and CEO of the Aurik Business Incubator.
“If we get our kids interested in entrepreneurship from the earliest possible age, we’ll soon have a generation of South Africans for whom building a business is as much a viable option as becoming a teacher, journalist, or whatever. Instead of taking an increasingly scarce job, we’ll be teaching them to create their own jobs, and many others.”
Phitidis will join Whitfield in studio to announce the winners live on air on 29 July.
The big Elon Musk Prize includes R5 000 and a day with Famous Brands CEO Kevin Hedderwick. Prize for the best concept is R2 500.
And prize for the most professional and organised business is R2 500.
