Junkie Charity Store makes a difference

MELVILLE – The Junkie Charity store believes in giving back to the less fortunate.

It is on rare occasions that you can do what you love and give back to the less-fortunate at the same time. Michelle de Villers is one of the lucky few to have that opportunity.

De Villers is the owner of Junkie Charity Store in Melville, and has turned her passion for shopping at charity stores and donating to worthy causes into a business. The Junkie Charity Store used to be situated at 97, 4th Avenue, Melville. Now the store is situated at 7A, 7th Street, Melville. Residents are welcome to drop off items at both locations.

De Villers used to love going to charity stores and decided it would be a positive way to make a difference. ” I started off by getting donations from friends. I would also build relationships with charity organisations over a period of time which helped me to identify which charities are in need,” she said.

The store owner supports charities such as The Salvation Army, Joburg Child Welfare and Melville Koppies Nature Reserve. ” So far I’ve received positive feedback from the community, everything that is in the store is donated by them and all the proceeds go to charities,” she said.

De Villers said when charities receive items, they often give them to her to resell for money that is later given back to them.

Junkie Chary Store recently celebrated its first birthday party at its new premises that is more spacious than the last. The store has an extended area that is used as a library.

De Villers encourages residents to donate whatever items they no longer use. ” Either by donating of spending your money you get to contribute to charities. I make sure I only sell quality goods and clothing that are of a high standard,” she said.
