Help the Sophiatown Christmas run
SOPHIATOWN – Sophiatown Neighbourhood Watch has a dream of a safe, united and beautiful suburb where children can walk around without fear.
Sophiatown Neighbourhood Watch is aiming at handing out 500 children’s gift packs and 420 gift packs for the elderly this year during its Christmas run.
Chairperson Dauw Steyn said they were looking for donations from residents and businesses for this project. “We are in need of sweets, any kind is welcome, gift bags, cookies, children’s gifts, soap and creams that elderly people can use for themselves,” he explained.
He explained that their aim was not only to uplift Sophiatown but also to make children and the elderly feel that they were appreciated in the community. “They need to know that the community cares and that the community is united in looking after and caring for our elderly and children,” he added.
Steyn appealed to members of the public who would be able to assist, to contact them. Last year they managed to hand out over 350 Christmas packets to children and 80 to the elderly. “Santa drives through the area handing out gifts to children and elderly residents. The smile on every face and, in some cases, the tears from a parent with a simple thank you makes this Santa drive worth it,” said Steyn.
He concluded that the run allowed patrollers to interact with residents and build a relationship on a more personal level.
