Mosque proposal at Town Planning Tribunal

NORTHCLIFF – The proposal received critisism from nearby neighbours.

An application for a proposed place of worship, a mosque on the corner of Mountainview Avenue and Castlehill Drive in Northcliff, after being opposed by nearby property owners, will now be referred to the town planning tribunal.

This according to the property consultant, Willie Buitendag. The future of the property will be determined when all the parties have been afforded the opportunity to make verbal representation to the tribunal hearing.

A previous application was lodged in February and another, amended one, was again lodged in late August this year.

According to the City of Johannesburg’s Development Planning guidelines, a decision on an application may take as long as 12 months. It said that if the application’s planning officer recommends an opposition to the application, and where interested parties have lodged objections, a tribunal hearing is scheduled and the applicant, objectors and council officials are given the opportunity to argue the case.

If there are still any objections to the tribunal’s decision, an appeal can be sent to the provincial authority.

Buitendag said the date of the hearing will be communicated to all parties at a later date.
