With the holiday season just around the corner, the Intelligence Bureau South Africa shared the following tips to prevent individuals from being a target of crime.
Safety tips:
- Be vigilant and keep vehicle windows closed when approaching a robot, especially at night
- Do not wear expensive jewelry when going out shopping
- Always check that your vehicle’s doors are locked before walking away from the vehicle
- Make sure your valuables, such as handbags, laptops and cellphones are stored out of sight before driving off
- Do not use your cellphone or let a passenger use their cellphone to chat or make calls while stuck in traffic.
- Besides the fact that you shouldn’t be using your cellphone while driving, handling your cellphone in the car creates an opportunity for a smash-and-grab
- When possible, park in paid parking areas that are monitored or where there are security guards
- Test your tracking device to ensure it is in good working order
- When parking your vehicle at home, park inside your garage or in a suitably lit area
- Try to use debit or credit cards when making your festive season purchases, instead of carrying cash or drawing cash at ATMs
- Test your home alarm system to ensure that your security company is receiving a signal when your alarm is activated.
