MANDLA MTOMBENI: We save water by not watering our gardens and filling up our pools. A number of factors influence us to save water besides Joburg Water such as school water drives and campaigns.
Over the last week there have been major water outages in two of the supply areas in the northern suburbs. Rand Water has been required to restrict supply to Johannesburg by 15 percent, the latest figures show that the demand has reduced by less than 10 percent. Although this may be a sight improvement, it’s still difficult for the city to balance the system.
Joburg water continuously urges residents to take the level two water restrictions seriously and to always save water. We asked residents what they do to save water.
Here is what they have to say:
JONGISIZWE NTSHUNTSHE: I save water by closing the tap when I brush my teeth, only use the washing machine when necessary, take less than 10 minutes in the shower and follow the level two water restrictions.
SARKA FARTHING: I save water by being a vegan. For every animal you don’t eat, you save eight times more water. Ultimately you can feed more people by eating plant based food.
SARAH PARSONS: At home we put bricks in the toilet so it uses less water. We also have a water tank to recycle water and my mother only waters the garden at night.
FAY HATZIKYRIACOS: I wash my dishes altogether rather than at different times of the day. I also shower for a short amount of time, use low water for the bath and only water the garden once a week.
LINDA SAVLE: I make sure all the taps are closed, wash dishes at once and use a bucket instead of a hose pipe in the yard.
RUAN SPES: We don’t water the lawn or our garden and we are conscious of the amount of water around the house. We try not take long showers and use water unnecessarily.
MOAUREEN NORRIS: I recently bought a water tank to save water by collecting water in order to water my garden. I’m planning to get a second one.
MANDLA MTOMBENI: We save water by not watering our gardens and filling up our pools. A number of factors influence us to save water besides Joburg Water such as school water drives and campaigns.
OLIVIER MTOMBENI: I save water by closing the tap when I’m bathing and brushing my teeth. I think it’s important to save water because you might need water to drink.
