Two arrested for an unlicensed firearm in Newclare

NEWCLARE – Suspects to face the music following a discovery of an unlicensed gun in their vehicle by police.

Sophiatown Police Station arrested two suspects for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

On the afternoon of 24 April, the station responded to a tip-off they received about a firearm.

This led them to Agatha Flats in Newclare where they found a white Toyota Corolla with two suspects inside the car.

Warrant officer for the station, TJ de Bruyn said that the suspects and vehicle were searched and they found a firearm hidden underneath the gear lever.

“The suspects were arrested and a case of possession of an unlicensed firearm was opened,” he said.

De Bruyn added that on further investigation it was established that the firearm had been stolen from a business.

He said they suspect the suspects could be linked to recent shootings in the area.

“The firearm will be sent for ballistic analysis. We urge the public to keep sending information regarding unlicensed firearms,” concluded De Bruyn.
