AUCKLAND PARK – University of Johannesburg students were given the opportunity to learn about how to improve their heath and fitness through a discussion.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) hosted a discussion with Fitness Magazine, titled Find Your Fitness –Simple ways to keep healthy.

The event took place at the UJ library and was attended by students and university staff members.

Fitness Magazine editor Pedro van Gaalen said through discussions he aimed to inform people about their fitness and health. He believed there was a high prevalence of misinformation about health issues.

“The convenience culture has really made processed food so prevalent in our lives which cause a number of health problems,” he said. “I don’t like to advocate extremes and say the Banting diet is right for everybody but it will definitely work for a lot of people. This is in spite of it causing a lot of controversy because it advocates against processed food. Some of the biggest manufacturers in the world are food manuafactures and have invested interest in pushing processed food.”

Gaalen gave the audience practical examples on how to lead a healthy lifestyle.

“A number of people think that in order to be fit and healthy you need to run marathons or cycle the 947, which is not true. What the body was designed to do was move often, whether through jogging or walking.”

He added that obesity had become an epidemic all over the world and caused a number of health issues.

“This is due to the type of food we eat [such as] fast food and over consumption of fast food. It is important to stay at the ideal weight for your height, also known as you Body Max Index [BMI].”

UJ student Bongani Mavundla said he found the discussion inspirational and learn’t a number of aspects about fitness and health.

“I plan to take Pedro’s advice and consume more healthy food,” said Mavundla.
