Sidewalk shrubbery poses a danger to Hursthill pedestrians

HURST HILL — An overgrown sidewalk forces pedestrians to walk into oncoming traffic.

A concerned resident has come forward about a potential pedestrian danger.

Hursthill resident, Ronald Rayners spoke out about Portland Avenue’s sidewalks. He pointed out that overgrown shrubbery on either side of the road which falls under Ward 58 and 69 puts pedestrians at risk of being hit by a car.

The overgrown shrubbery on the Ward 58 side of the Portland Avenue sidewalk.

“Pedestrians are forced to walk in the street at two sections on this road. It’s dangerous and it gets even worse when it rains,” Rayners said.

The two sidewalk sections on either side of the road are particularly dangerous because it is a route many Vorentoe High School children use to get to and from school.

The shrubbery closest to Vorentoe seems to be the result of an unkempt bush on a private property. On the opposite side, the source of the shrubbery is located on the sidewalk.

Ronald Rayners says the overgrown shrubbery on Portland Avenue’s sidewalks puts pedestrians at risk for being hit by a car.

The Northcliff Melville Times approached Ward 69 councillor, Genevive Sherman. She explained the road acts as a border between Ward 69 and 58. On her side is the private residence with the overgrown bush and the shrubs in Ward 58 are a council issue.

Rayners said he raised the issue with Sherman during a council walkabout in the area which Sherman confirmed. She said the area was cleaned not too long ago but is unsure which sections were cleaned and why the sidewalk issue was skipped. She added that she will contact Rayners to follow up.

Ward 58 councillor Alex Christian was not available by the time of publication, however, the matter is being taken up by Sherman.
