A criminal gained access into a Toby Street residence at about 11.45pm on 26 August.
Warrant Officer TJ de Bruyn, spokesperson for Sophiatown Police Station, confirmed the incident and said a case of trespassing was opened.
“The case was changed from being malicious damage to property to trespassing,” De Bruyn said.
It is believed that the trespasser was allegedly attempting to rob the house.
De Bruyn said the trespasser jumped the perimeter fence while the homeowner was watching television. He explained that the homeowner heard barking dogs and pressed the panic button.
A local security company as well as the Sophiatown Neighbourhood Watch (SNW) arrived on the scene and apprehended the suspect and handed him over to Sophiatown police.
SNW has since taken to Facebook stating that criminals should not commit crime in the Sophiatown community as they would be caught.
They thanked the Sophiatown police, the security company and all involved in the arrest.
