RUSTY VAN DER WALT: I think the majority of people voicing their opinions try to voice it by force and by violence instead of going to the polls and voicing it through their vote.

From blocking roads to burning tyres and even to walking down the street, South Africans have impactful ways of making a statement. We asked residents for their opinion on the way we protest as a nation. This is what you had to say …

DITEKO NKWANA: Violent protests are delivered wrong. Free speech allows them to say anything. I don’t think it is an ideal way of communication.

TRACY DAVIS: We do need a platform to express ourselves and exercise freedom of expression. The problem is trying to find that correct forum to speak.

FRAN HASLAM: I think everybody has freedom of speech. It is one way of telling people they are not happy. I don’t like the violence. I think it should be peaceful and happen through negotiation.

ALLEN MCCAB: I think there are better ways of doing it, but I don’t know if anyone has the answer. People get frustrated because the election is still far away.
