Use these tips to avoid housebreaking and theft

LINDEN – A spurt of housebreakings in the past couple of weeks prompted police to issue safety tips.

The Linden Police are appealing to the community to be vigilant after a spurt of housebreakings in the past couple of weeks.

Linden Police spokesperson Constable Takalani Matumba said, “Homeowners are leaving their valuable things lying around during the night. In most cases, bicycles and other valuable goods are left outside or inside the garage where it is much more simple to access.”

Due to this increase, the police have issued the following tips to avoid housebreaking and theft:

  • Keep all emergency numbers on your cell phone or phone book
  • Curtains of your house should be closed after dark to prevent suspects from observing the activities inside the house
  • Do not leave your garage door open or partially open
  • Report any suspicious movement that can be a threat to you
  • Instal security gates and keep them locked
  • Keep your entrance clear of large plants to prevent suspects from hiding there
  • Make arrangements with your neighbours when you plan to go for a holiday and build up a good relationship with them.
