Public lecture on recycling with reclaimers to be held at Wits University
BRAAMFONTEIN – Get first-hand information on the future of recycling and reclaimers.
Ever wondered how those pushing trolleys full of trash contribute to the country’s recycling efforts and economy? Those who answered yes will be happy to know that Wits University’s Dr Melanie Samson will be delivering a public lecture addressing the matter.
The lecture, which will be held on 23 July at the Wits origins centre, comes after months of public debates and discussions on the roles of reclaimers (also known as waste pickers).
In this talk, Dr Samson will explain how reclaimers created South Africa’s system to collect recyclables. She will also elaborate on how their efforts make a positive contribution to the economy, environment and society and the negative effects for everyone when they are excluded from official separation at source programmes. The talk will conclude by discussing the role that residents can play in creating a just, inclusive, and effective recycling economy.
