Businesses targeted after hours

BRIXTON – Police have advised business owners to prioritise safety over profit.

Police have warned businesses in the area not to operate till late due to safety and security risks.

The targeting of businesses that continue to operate late into the night is still an issue in the Brixton Policing Precinct. According to the spokesperson for the Brixton Police Station, Jeanette Backhoff, stores have not taken their safety and security advice to refrain from staying open till late. “Business owners are urged to trade according to the trading hours on their permits to avoid being a victim of crime.”

The station has urged business owners to continue to exercise caution and think of their safety as well as those of their clients. Backhoff added that the festive season approaches, businesses will become more vulnerable to crime. “We need all business owners to come on board and assist us to keep themselves and the community in the area where they trade safely. We can only make a difference with your support.”

Unfortunately all business, regardless of whether they adhere to their trading hours, can be victims of crime.

Brixton police have offered the following safety tips for businesses if they are robbed:

  • Keep hands still where the robber can see them.
  • Remain calm at all times.
  • Do exactly what you are told to do.
  • Be observant of the criminals (tattoos, scars, accent, etc.) and their vehicles so you can share as much information as possible with the police.
  • Do not argue with or physically fight them.
  • Report the incident as soon as the criminals escape.
