Valentine’s Day robberies in Emmarentia

EMMARENTIA – Cases have been opened and the station is determined to find those responsible.

Two robbery cases were opened on Valentine’s Day after two separate incidents took place, minutes apart.

Three people were left traumatised on 14 February after being robbed in two separate incidents. A spokesperson for Parkview Police Station, Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, shared the details of the robberies.

The first incident was that of a stolen iPad just before 6.30pm in Emmarentia. Sibeko said the victim alleged that he was walking at the Emmarentia Botanical Gardens, listening to music on his iPad. “A man wearing black clothes showed him a firearm and started searching for him. The victim was robbed of his gadget and earphones and the suspect walked away.”

The second incident happened minutes after the first, also at the Emmarentia Botanical Gardens. A couple was robbed of their phones and other items.

According to Sibeko, “The couple was approached by two men. One of the suspects had a firearm and the couple was robbed of their cell phones and other valuables.”

Both cases were reported at the station and investigations are underway, said Sibeko.

She added, “The Station Commander of Parkview police, Colonel Theledi Gopane, has ordered the crime prevention members as well as detectives to find those who are responsible, and bring them to book.”

As the police crackdown on crime in the area, they have pleaded with the public to do their bit to stay safe.

The following tips can make residents aware of the opportunities criminals might take:

  • Never walk around alone. Be on the lookout for strange cars or people.
  • Walk in well-lit busy streets and in a group, if possible.
  • Always let someone know where you are going and how long you will be gone.
  • Think twice before advertising your impending absence on social media.
  • Know and have easy access to call emergency numbers.
  • Avoid displaying valuables where criminals can see them.

Parkview police appeal to the public for information.
