Melville’s safest exercising block
MELVILLE – Joggers, runners and cyclists advised to exercise while keeping themselves safe.
Beagle Watch Armed Response and the Melville Security Initiative joined forces to keep the joggers and cyclists of Melville safe during their morning exercise.
Under Level 4 of the lockdown, members of the public could only exercise between 6am and 9am and some of these people were being targeted by criminals. The two organisations have identified a rectangular square in the heart of Melville where additional security has been allocated to keep those trying to stay healthy and fit safe.
Beagle Watch’s general manager André Aiton said, “We know through experience that maintaining high visibility is an excellent crime deterrent and this is part of our proactive approach to fighting crime in the areas we serve.”
Beagle Watch had increased its patrols during the exercise time slot following reports of criminals using the time to rob victims of their wallets and cell phones. Aiton pledged their assistance to joggers and cyclists by adding additional patrols and maintaining extra high visibility during the periods of exercise.
The following safety tips were shared by Beagle Watch for the safe exercising of the public:
- If possible, always walk or jog with a friend or dog
- Avoid secluded areas and open fields that are overgrown and stay in sight of other walkers or runners, as far as possible
- Keep your cell phone out of sight and refrain from using it while out in public
- Leave your valuables at home, do not wear jewellery and expensive items when out and about
- Ensure that someone knows which route you plan to follow and what time you expect to be back at home
- Always be vigilant and aware of your surroundings and avoid wearing earphones while walking or jogging.
