Fake banker scams man of his money

LINDEN – A case of fraud has been opened and is being investigated by the police, but Sibiya advised the community to never share any of their banking or card details over the phone.

Man tricked into giving card details lost nearly R20 000.

Linden police urge members of the public to be alert when it comes to scammers contacting them with the aim to defraud them of their money. This comes after a man was duped into giving his bank card details to a woman pretending to call him from his bank which resulted in him losing R18 500, according to the station’s spokesperson Constable Takalani Sibiya.

“On October 16, the complainant was called by a lady and informed the complainant that he had done three transaction of R5 000 each with a cellphone network provider. The complainant didn’t know about it, but he was told that it will only appear on the system of the bank and that the call was being recorded for security reasons.”
The man believed the caller and was told that the transactions could be cancelled if he could confirm his credit card number, expiration date and CCV number to verify his account details and he did so.

The caller then informed the complainant that all the transactions had been cancelled and that he would receive an SMS confirming this. Sibiya added, “The complainant then tried to check his bank account on his cellphone banking but he could not log into the system.

He then later received SMS showing an amount of R18 500 was transferred from his account.” A case of fraud has been opened and is being investigated by the police, but Sibiya advised the community to never share any of their banking or card details over the phone.

“Rather tell whoever is calling you that you will visit your nearest bank to fix whatever problem they are telling you about.”

Sibiya added that banks will never call and request such information over the phone and warned the public to be weary of such scams.
