Cellphone snatchers apprehended

MELVILLE – Cell phone snatchers unknowingly targets police officer.

Cellphone snatching is one of the common robberies taking place around the Melville area and police have been looking to make arrests of those involved.

Brixton police detectives recently busted three suspects after one of the suspects tried to grab a constable’s phone while he was visiting one of the restaurants in Melville. Brixton Police Station spokesperson Jeanette

Backhoff explained, “According to Constable Ntsie Clement Tsehle, he was busy on his cellphone when someone ran past him and grabbed his cellphone from his hand. The suspect tried to run away but the constable managed to trip the suspect by kicking him on his ankle.” Security officers saw what was happening and assisted the constable in apprehending the snatcher.

“The suspect who grabbed the phone was running towards a silver Toyota Corolla with the back door open and when the occupants in the vehicle saw what was happening, they tried to get away but luckily there was another vehicle that had blocked the road. Constable Tsethle and security guards managed to catch both of the occupants in the getaway vehicle.

“On further investigation, it was found that the vehicle that was used had false number plates and that the number plate in front and the one at the back were not the same. The suspects were arrested and charged at Brixton Police Station.

“The quick response of the constable led to the arrest of three suspects who might also be involved in other common robbery cases opened in and around Melville. We also want to thank the security officers who assisted Constable Tsethle as their hard work is highly appreciated.”
