Clay project to welcome the new year
To start off a year that wil be full of imaginative art, the students of Lillian Gray got their hands dirty with some clay work.
The learners of Lillian Gray Fine Art School started the year by getting their hands dirty by creating clay sculptures.
The first clay project of the year was inspired by sculptor and visual artist Wilma Cruise. “Our youngsters and tweens made dog or monkey sculptures while the teens made clay monkeys in her [Cruise] style. They each added their personal touch,” said teacher Jemma Sander.
Sander said creating such pieces helped develop learners’ hand-eye coordination and motor skills. It also gave the learners experience in making three-dimensional objects and allowed them to express themselves.
“We find it important to teach our students about local artists, by doing this they can see nothing is impossible in this country and they can make a career out of art.”
