Fifty years of karate-do in Northcliff

Sei-Shihan George Wong speaks on his advanced sixth dan black belt that saw him head to New York City to attain.

Recently, Sei-Shihan George Wong from Seido Karate Northcliff successfully graded to his advanced sixth dan black belt under Kaicho (grandmaster) Tadashi Nakamura in New York City.

Wong was one of three candidates from around the world who completed a gruelling 16-hour test to achieve this level. He also achieved a personal milestone earlier this year by completing 50 years of continuous practice of karate-do, as he started training as a young boy under the Kyokushin system, and has stayed with Seido Karate since their formation 47 years ago in 1976.

He attributes this achievement to the inspiration he receives from his students and his seniors for their help, dedication and support. In a recent class. he shared some of the Seido philosophy and one of their meditation lectures ‘Hito Kome Hito Ase’ (One grain of rice, one drop of sweat). Wong spoke about learning to appreciate the effort that goes into the tiniest and often overlooked aspects of life and not to take people and things for granted.

“We should all be more appreciative of each other and realise that we are all interdependent. We should, in turn, make sure that we all go about life and do our work better as others may rely on the fruits of our labour,” he said.

He also expressed hope that this type of thinking would permeate more widely in the interest of peace and a better life for all, through respect and appreciation of each other.
