VOX POP: Residents reflect on the importance of the upcoming elections
As the country marks 30 years since the shackles of apartheid were thrown off, the political landscape is uneasy. We spoke to some residents about their opinions on the polls.
Sphesihle Mabheka: This year we are celebrating 30 years of democracy, so I believe this year’s elections are important and I hope they are worth it.
There are murmurs that the upcoming election will be the ‘most important’ election of South Africa’s young democracy.
The paper spoke to residents who shared their views on this as we count down to the upcoming national and provincial elections next month.
Anton Adlam: I think it is the most important election since independence because we got to get rid of the ruling party, hope whichever party wins brings change.Sthembile Nokwanda Gambo: I think this year’s elections are important, the IFP will be voting for the first time without their leader and there are new parties that joined the voter’s roll.Donillo Paulse: Yes, I do believe it is quite important. I think there is a change in parliament that needs to happen, especially with having the youth take over.Yandisa Mabheka: I think these elections are important because, ever since the democracy things have been easy here in South Africa, and am hoping whichever party wins will make a difference.Sphesihle Mabheka: This year we are celebrating 30 years of democracy, so I believe this year’s elections are important and I hope they are worth it.
