South African Fencer Harry Saner aims to make an Olympic impact and grow the sport.

Harry Saner swash buckles his way to the Olympics.

For Harry Saner (23), fencing became evident as he recalled memories from his childhood, from lightsabers in Star Wars to the finesse Zorro had with the blade, which captivated him.

He begged his parents to find him a fencing club, and now he has earned the opportunity to represent South Africa in the Olympics. Saner is no stranger to international competition, having participated in the World Cup, Grand Prix, Zone Championships, and the World Championships.

Each match teaches him to stay calm in chaotic situations, and he is grateful for the backing of his support structure. “I’m grateful for the community around me who can help me get through these difficulties. My friends and family have been vital to keeping me on track and getting me back on track after sickness or injury.”

Saner’s five-year plan includes growing fencing in South Africa and creating a strong fencing culture. “Fencing gives me self-confidence and calmness amidst life’s challenges, allowing me to balance my studies in mechanical engineering at the University of Witwatersrand.”

He believes in constantly learning from other athletes. He seeks inspiration from greats such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson and Bruce Lee, as well as modern fencing superstars Yannick Borel and Max Heinzer.

After each match, Saner has a lesson he takes to the next match. His opponents teach him to sharpen his mindset, motivating him to create a winning mentality that helps him adapt and perform at his best.

His career highlights include winning medals in the African championship and securing a bronze in the individual event. Saner is determined to keep improving and aims to achieve the best in his sport. As he prepares to represent South Africa at the Olympics, he hopes to add more silverware to his collection.
