At the core of the book is the profound understanding that animals despise being left behind, particularly when their human companions head off to work.

Meintjies, a passionate advocate for animal welfare and an active member of the Facebook page for English Springer Spaniels, aims to raise awareness about the importance of nurturing these cherished relationships.

Reflecting on her own experiences with Merlyn, she acknowledges the need to view the world from an animal’s perspective. As she embarked on her business ventures in the early 1980s, travelling to remote parts of the world, Merlyn was left behind.

Through Merlyn’s humorous anecdotes and adventures, readers are invited to witness life through the lens of a dog, understanding that their experiences can be as intrepid and captivating as those of their human counterparts.

The book features a collection of captivating photographs, many of which have been sourced from the Rosebank Killarney Gazette. She reminisces on a time when dogs were welcomed in hotels and even airports, allowing them to accompany their owners on grand adventures.

“In the 80s and 90s, dogs like Merlyn would journey farther than they do today, exploring new horizons and breaking barriers. While Merlyn’s story is filled with lighthearted moments, it also touches upon the inevitable hardships that life throws at us.”

Merlyn’s passing in 2000 serves as a poignant reminder of the deep bond shared between humans and their furry companions.
